Yesterday, baby Abbey Flyte left our big blue planet to join her Mommy in heaven. I received an email on Saturday from Katie’s sister, Jill, which informed me that Abbey has a SIDS-like episode on Feb 1. Abbey fought for her life for 3 weeks, but she was just so damaged from suffering oxygen loss, and Kenny and his family made the brave and painful decision to pull Abbey off of life support. Today, Jill confirmed that Abbey has passed to meet her Mommy in heaven. I am so grateful to have known baby Abbey from a distance. To have showered her with gifts and love, and to have let her Daddy know that strangers will embrace him now and always.

I pray for the strength of this family as they grieve the losses of both Katie and Abbey. I pray for their comfort in the fact that Katie will be able to cradle her baby now. I pray for Kenny to find comfort in the cuddles of his little boy, Jacob. And I pray for Jacob, to have a fun and peaceful childhood, free from any more tragedy.

Thanks to my friends, old and new, ones who helped me organize this shower, and who have helped me deal with this sadness.

Baby Abbey Flyte will never know her mommy, Katie Flyte, who passed away on August 11th after suffering complications from the H1N1 flu virus. Baby Abbey was born via c-section on June 30th while her mommy was in a coma. In September, Abbey was able to come home from the hospital to her daddy, Kenny, and her big brother Jacob (who is 2). The family lives in Puyallup, WA.

When we hear about tragedies like this, our hearts ache. There is nothing more tender and fragile in this world than a tiny baby. We want to be able to reach out and help, even if it’s in a very small way. So please join us in showering baby Abbey and the Flyte family with a little joy, and send a gift card that can be used to buy what the family needs.

Gift cards will be more beneficial that physical gifts during this time, as Abbey’s immediate needs have already been met. Gift cards to retailers such as Target, Walmart and Costco will be very useful, as they can be used for a range of needs from diapers and formula to clothes and toys. And gift cards give more than the gifts they buy – they offer a sense of financial security, stress relief, and let’s face it – an excuse to get out of the house with the kids!

What is a virtual baby shower? It is way to embrace a family in need, and support a very special baby from afar. There is no actual party, or event. You simply buy a gift card, and send it to A Simple Wish, who has kindly offered to collect the gifts so they can be delivered to the Flyte family.

Why are you encouraging gift cards? At this point, the family has sufficient baby clothes and baby gear. Gift cards will enable Kenny to buy what he needs for baby Abbey, her brother Jacob, and himself. It also allows you to give a small amount or a large amount – whatever you are comfortable with. And it’s a gift that keeps on giving – think of the relief Kenny will feel when he goes out shopping, and knows that he can draw upon these gift cards, reminded of the generous support of his community, and strangers from far away, each time he uses them.
